The foundation stone for DIT's new Mechatronics Engineering laboratory complex was laid this week on the Kakuri campus, marking the beginning of the second phase of the institute's capital programme.
The 2,400 m² complex will house industrial robotics cells, hydraulics and pneumatics rigs, PLC trainer stations, and a dedicated embedded-systems prototyping area. At full capacity it will serve over 240 students per academic session across both ND and HND cohorts.
A working facility, by design
The complex was specified end-to-end by Mechatronics Engineering faculty in conjunction with the Defence Industries Corporation's own production engineers. The brief was to build a teaching facility that looks and runs like an actual industrial production cell — not a sanitised academic mock-up.
Construction is scheduled to complete in time for the 2027/28 session.
Funding and oversight
Capital allocation for the project sits within the ₦4.2 billion 2026 federal allocation announced earlier this year. Oversight is shared between the institute's Bursary and DICON's own capital projects directorate.
